REVISION SURGERY

As more gynecologists, urologists, plastic surgeons, and cosmetic surgeons perform labial and vaginal surgeries, the need for revision surgery has steadily risen. Most surgeons attempting labial and vaginal surgeries have had no formalized training in aesthetic vaginal surgeries. Herein lies the problem. This leads to complications, displeasing appearance, and unhappy patients. You read of horror stories in blogs and marketing websites. More and more anecdotal reports have surfaced about less than optimal results following labiaplasty surgery such as lumpiness, asymmetry, excess removal of tissue, disrupted blood supply, scars, and pain. Yes, the simple labiaplasty can and does go wrong at times. Your surgeon should be able to handle any contingencies.

Furthermore, vaginoplasty patients report painful intercourse, tightening only of the entry, lack of deep tightening, and recurrence of looseness. This has given established labial and vaginal surgery experts more secondary attempts at repairing improperly done or aesthetically displeasing surgeries. This has also given a select group of surgeons more and more legal consultations from patients and lawyers alike as the standard of care evolves and grows. In our center, a full 10% of work is done as revision surgery from other states and other countries. Revision patients have come in from Mexico, Russia, Canada, UK, and Africa.

The number or revision surgery continues to rise as more reshaping, resurfacing, re-tightenings are asked for. It behooves a surgeon thinking of performing labiaplasty and vaginoplasty surgery to be properly and completely trained before attempting these intricate surgeries. It is currently the recommendations of major aesthetic/cosmetic/plastic surgery organizations to have any practitioner of the art be well versed and well trained before attempting aesthetic labial and vaginal surgeries on their own. As for re-dos and revisions, it only makes sense to go the most experienced and qualified vaginal surgeon you can find. These ultra-specialists can then smoothen any lumpiness and irregularity with precision resufacing tools such as the Ellman, help refine and reduce scars, rebuild labias with holes in them, and restore the tightness that may have been lost. They can also make sex comfortable and enjoyable when there is too much tightness.
